about the host
Hoang Nam Viet (b. 1985, Ho Chi Minh City) is a self-taught painter and multidisciplinary artist. After working in advertising, he began painting oils at 28 and committed fully to his practice at 30. He is also the founder of Hoàng Thị café, a beloved creative hub in Ho Chi Minh City.
His paintings center on the people closest to him — friends, colleagues, familiar faces — rendered with candor and warmth. Broadly expressionist in sensibility, his work resists sentimentality while affirming the depth of everyday human connection. Recent works incorporate found imagery, expanding his visual vocabulary beyond portraiture.
Hoang Nam Viet has exhibited widely across Ho Chi Minh City's contemporary art scene, including Password 0~1 at MoT+++; Lunar Breccia and Hopscotch at Galerie Quynh; The Primacy of Drawing at Dia Projects; Chung at PongDang Gallery; and Out of Nowhere at Sao La. He is represented by Galerie Quynh and lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City.
about the space
Situated in the apartment building at 14 Tôn Thất Đạm — one of the city's French colonial-era buildings with classical European architecture — Hoàng Thị Studio is a uniquely personal space, shaped entirely by Hoang Nam Viet's sensibility.
The studio and accommodation are located within the Hoàng Thị café compound, on the first floor of the building. The café also houses a tattoo studio, photo booth, and a small community gathering space. The resident's area is a mezzanine directly within the café; improvements to ensure privacy and comfort will be made ahead of residencies.
Artists may choose to work in the resident space or share Hoang Nam Viet's personal studio at the rear of the café — an airy space with its own loft. Looking through the studio window, you look out onto the animated courtyard of an ancient apartment complex.
collaboration
Hoang Nam Viet is genuinely open to collaborating — across mediums, across ideas, in whatever form feels right. He welcomes shared making, conversation, and critique as natural parts of living and working alongside someone.
